New Waters New Birds
It is a warm and almost balmy day and it would be so if it weren't for a steady 15 mph wind blowing off of the sound. I set out from a wooded bank into a large marsh estuary near the mouth of the Housatonic River and set an upwind route.
The tide is still flooding with two hours to go. The base of the spartina grass is awash by a good two or three feet. Where I came from on the Salish Sea, spartina was an aggressive invasive plant that people spent much time and effort to remove. Here, it is native. It seems to hold the ground together quite well. When low tide comes it will be completely out of the water.
I don't go far before I see a female (or juvenile) surf scoter. Then, there is a pair of little blue herons (about half size to the great blue heron). I shoot a photo of a brownish heron that I do not recognize (it turns out to be an immature yellow crowned night heron). I spot a swan in the distance over the tops of the grass. With my head down, a pulsing wheezing squeak draws my attention up and I see the massive swan fly over.

There is a good sized flock of brant geese to my right and a second swan ahead. I reach a narrow spit of sand and cobble and decide to return in the direction of my put-in. The wind carries me at times at a surprising speed through the narrow channels in the spartina.
It is time for lunch when I get there. But, I would rather eat in the canoe, so I head out once more into the wind.

A new Hillman Imp made from an old one has a new owner
The car was first licenced on the 1st of January 1973, so we assumed it was a 1971 built car but we had a records search done on the car and found it dated to 1971.
The car is always rebuilt from the floor pan and upwards, seems to be a logical way to start.

The original paint shade has been returned to the engine bay which in this case is in the back of the car.
The front suspension has been dry fitted to test all the correct Rootes Car Co bolts are correct.
The original metal fluid pipes were acid cleaned and electroplated again.
The steering rack was cleaned, all metal parts re plated and with a new output shaft seal set will be good to go again once Shells gear oil has been added.

New paddle day and goose butts
It is completely clouded over in a watercolor wash of blues with no definition, no hard lines, except where the sun backlights two fingers worth of the eastern horizon.

There is some N wind in the big lake, but the bay is calm, protected by a ridge from the north, and it is a place to stop for coffee without losing distance. I come up the east shore in quiet hearing only the dip of the paddle and the zip of its feathered and submerged return. There is no movement until two eagles whistle and I slowly come up out of my daze. I stop and they stop. I don't know why, but they will whistle wildly when I pass by, but the second I stop to watch, they go silent. The two eagles are sitting in a flat topped diodor cedar, where I often see eagles. When I drift too close one gets up and flies to a new perch a quarter mile south. Then the second follows. I hear the whistle of greeting when they meet up again. Neither of these two were large enough to be from the north nest. Whether they are passing through or nest somewhere nearby, I don't know.
I continue towards the railroad island, my original destination for a coffee break. A third eagle sits on the perch there, and it takes wing when I am way too far away to be the cause. It begins a circling hunt over something in the north marsh, giving up soon and returning. I steer clear of the railroad island so as not to disturb the eagle. It is probably one of the north nest residents. This is their turf.I head towards something white floating off of the north point. I saw it from quite some distance and it turns out to be a down comforter. I squeeze water from half of it, tie it to the canoe and drag it to shore where I can drain it.
There are many teal in the channel of #1 island. They are new arrivals, along with the new pair of eagles. I flush a green backed heron also. It won't be long before it leaves for the winter.

A new wind is a blowing
Google's Blogger suffered an outage for about a day, much to my distress. I had posted the little non sequitur piece about the subliminal images I spotted, and the following day, it was gone. After a few brief paranoid thoughts about Nazi frogmen hacking into my blog, and seeing I could not access the editor, I realized that it wasn't FOX's minions who were responsible, but Google's cloudy system. I did suffer some minor P in the A losses because of the outage, and it has resulted in my doing a long overdue full back up of the blog and templates.
I am in the process of finishing a series of changes largely prompted by Ben Ellison's very gracious, and constructive suggestions. It demonstrates the fact that I am my own worst editor. In the short run, I have added a search feature that not only includes the blog, but has the option of including any links to the blog. I am close to finishing a "read more" feature, which will provide a preview paragraph, or two of the story (like Panbo). This will allow more stories to appear on the primary landing page. I am doing this outside of Blogger via some custom HTML code, and it may be a little bumpy or weird at first. It will take me about a week to re-edit all of the earlier published material into the new template format. All of the older material should look as it originally did, in theory at any rate, until they are reformatted.
I also agree the current archives are inscrutable, and awkward, and the new sidebar will display the titles of all of the stories, and rolling the cursor over a title will display a snippet of the text. Oh scariest of all I am buying a video camera, so there will more of those newfangled moving pictures that will include my dulcet tones. My pedantic droning might be useful to put you to sleep. In the short run, the stories in process are a little constipated, but with a little digital Ex Lax help, several will pop out in the next 48 hours. Why does my new boat have obsolete equipmnt
Avarice, poor decisions, and or acts of the angry wrathful technology gods are why I often see obsolete equipment on a new boat. How does this happen? I will pose a scenario that will explain how it happens, but it is still inexcusable that it happens at all in most cases.
Greed, or greed coupled with ignorance creates the biggest source of obsolete equipment, and here is how it can happen. The Chartomatic chartplotter company designs its new version 7 Chartomatic system (It won’t have any of the problems of the earlier Chartomatic version 6), and they start to manufacture them. Some one in Chartomatic’s management team notes the obvious that there are still 2000 Chartomatic version 6 units still in the warehouse, and they direct sales to discount these units, and sell them off quickly. Eager salesmen visit the boat builders, and tell them, "Have I got a deal for you, Chartomatic version 6 units are now half price for a limited time only". Limited time is only for as long as they have the units in stock. The boat builder says, "This is a good deal and we will buy 300 systems". Chartomatic ships the now obsolete systems, the builder installs the now obsolete systems, and sends the boats to the dealers who sell the boats with now obsolete systems.
Now I could say that the Chartomatic salesman did not bother to tell the boat builder that the systems are now obsolete, thus taking the blame off the boat builders, but I believe that the boat builders see an opportunity to get some additional margin out of a business that operates on razor thin margins. I have seen dealer invoices for the installed obsolete equipment that reflect the original full MSRP price, and not the discounted price the builder paid. Even worse, the buyer is usually not told the equipment on his new boat is no longer being made.
This happens with not only the Chartomatic systems, but often with other equipment of the vessel such as TV’s, microwave ovens, stereo equipment, and other related gear. I have recently been on brand new boats that had TV’s that don’t have digital tuners in them. You would have been hard pressed to go to a big box electronics store two years ago, and find a TV that didn’t have a digital tuner, and so the TV’s being installed were bought earlier, and were already obsolete when they were purchased at "Such a deal for you Mr Boatbuilder".
The boat buyer is hurt in several ways here. Not only is the equipment no longer being made, but he or she has been robbed of the time available to have the equipment repaired if it fails. All manufacturers will stop repairing the old gear at some point due non available parts, or to push customers into newer equipment. The replacement of a simple TV in a boat can be an expensive, and tedious task. You have to find a TV with the same exterior dimensions (The original TV is no longer being made), remove the old set, which is often difficult (When reason fails, force prevails). The mounts on the back of the TV’s are never in the same place, power has to be un-harnessed and new power pulled back in, and the story goes on.
Now all of this being said, in a few years of ownership, all of these problem will eventually present themselves anyway, but boat builders should not try to speed this problem up at the owners expense.
The wrathful technology gods do often play a role in this problem. Boat builders can buy the latest gear available, and six months later the manufacturer is out of business due to any number of conditions. This is certainly statistically more likely if the equipment is on the "Bleeding edge of technology". In the posting above, there is a photo of equipment that is on a four year old boat that can’t be repaired, is no longer made, and the work around fix will cost as much as the original equipment. The gods have spoketh.

Sailing in New York Harbor
Here's a shot of the Frank Gehry designed building affectionately known as The Sails. Here's a very nice interactive website about the design (click here). The video animation shows the importance of 3D modeling to his work and is the same sort of process we follow when designing boats, although the computer program they use is even more sophisticated and developed in-house.
It's nice to see this modern building with its sailing motif when out on the water. Here's another shot.
