HotSpot using an iPad

While gathering up (purchasing the required items) for my ipad, to add to the boat,  I came across this piece of information from Latitude 38 Magazine. (They have an on line version as well as a PDF version of their published magazine.)
It is a story about using your iPad as a hotspot for up to five other devices. Hop over to their story and get the full text.  I haven't purchased my iPad yet and was unaware of this feature. But I certainly hope to use it.

Any way, Latitude 38 goes on to  state, "Just go to the main TelCel office, replace your U.S. SIM card with a Mexican SIM card, and your iPad becomes a 'hot spot' — meaning that up to five other nearby devices can wirelessly use it for internet access also."

Of course this all depends on whether your carrier supports it. For instance, in the USA,  Verizon includes the hot-spot feature with the iPad data plans, while AT&T doesn't support it.

This has distinct advantages for us, because we carry a PC, a Mac, and soon to be added, an iPad. We use to use a cell phone modem that could connect up to five devices also. I liked it a lot because we never had to plug it into a computer to get a connection. We had two, from two different carriers because of the different reception coverage areas.

But I was also thinking about the iMux I bought. It can only connect one device at a time. And so I was wondering if I can connect with the iPad to the iMux when underway, and  stream the data to other devices, such as my PC which also has charting software?? I will write a blog later in 2013 about how I set up my iMux, iPad, and iNavX. Till then, those with an iPad can follow these instructions for setup.

Follow this link to get the low down of how to set up your Hotspot
or follow this
Tap Settings > General > Cellular Data:

Tap Personal Hotspot and turn it on:

After configuring Personal Hotspot, you can directly access the settings from Settings > Personal Hotspot.

A new Hillman Imp made from an old one has a new owner

The car was first licenced on the 1st of January 1973, so we assumed it was a 1971 built car but we had a records search done on the car and found it dated to 1971.

The car is always rebuilt from the floor pan and upwards, seems to be a logical way to start.

The original paint shade has been returned to the engine bay which in this case is in the back of the car.

The front suspension has been dry fitted to test all the correct Rootes Car Co bolts are correct.

The original metal fluid pipes were acid cleaned and electroplated again.

The steering rack was cleaned, all metal parts re plated and with a new output shaft seal set will be good to go again once Shells gear oil has been added.

Refurbishing a favourite paddle into an heirloom

Six years ago, I was working on the woodburning decoration of the c1849 replica when my pregnant wife's water broke and we rushed to the hospital.

Working on the paddle the night my older son was born (2008)

For that reason, that paddle has always been linked to my firstborn so I decided to commemorate the occasion by decorating the other side with a height marker, images of his little hands, feet and some important milestones (see that full post here). It has become a bit of family tradition to take the paddle off the wall on his birthday and burn on his new height before eating the cake. The cherry wood has darkened in the past 6 years and now the "little guy" has grown up to the base of the grip on this 58" paddle.

The decorated blade

With the recent birth of our 2nd child, I decided to refurbish another cherry paddle with a similar height marker. This Cherry Guide paddle is actually the favourite all-around paddle design I've carved and this paddle has accompanied me on many excursions. You can see it in action in a few of my Youtube videos, like the daytrip to the Limberlost Wilderness Preserve.

Decorated and Plain sides of the Cherry Guide paddle

While not exactly the same design as the original heirloom paddle, they were both carved from the same stock of cherry and have the identical blade shape. Basically the two paddles are close enough to be "siblings" so thought this would be appropriate for little brother. This paddle has been heavily oiled over the years, but fortunately that process still permits some pyrography to be added later - another reason why I prefer oiling to varnish. The woodburning tips need to be at higher heat than unfinished wood and this causes them to collect a burnt residue needing frequent pausing to clean, so the process is slow but satisfactory. Just as last time, a metal straight edge was clamped to the paddle to burn the centre line and the inch markers.

Marking off and burning the lines

Previously, I used an old scanner to get a digital image of my older son's hands & feet. The old  scanner is broken so to get a realistic-sized copy of our newborn's hands and  feet, I pressed his hands against a pane of glass, took a photo, and used Photoshop to render the image into "photocopy" mode as the starting point for the burn.

The images were slowly burned onto the blade along with his birth details and now little brother has an heirloom paddle of his own.

Little brother's paddle details

Managed to take a shot of us practicing a paddle stroke with his future paddle on dry land.

June 22, 2015 Update: The two heirloom paddles have been temporarily retired from active tripping and are now on the wall waiting for the kids to grow up. See post HERE

An Everglades 35 with some very clever dockside bondage work

I always like nice rope work, and I can do the basics, but although functional, it never looks as good as this exceptional example does. This is my friend Mel Glickman's 35 Everglades, and it lives in the Tripp and Davis marina in South Dartmouth MA. I have a special relationship with this boat. When Mel bought it new, he wanted electronics for it. Although the boat was not geographically attractive to do the work myself, I designed its systems, prepared a bill of materiels, did wiring diagrams, and installation notes, purchased, and shipped all of the gear to Mel, who had it locally installed. It has twin Garmin 5212 12" touch screen displays, HD radar, 300 VHF AIS, sounder module, and a 1000W transducer. With only a couple minor tribulations (you had to read the wiring diagrams) everything worked out ok, and my long distance relationship with the vessel continues to this day. So when Mel sent me these pictures I was amazed, to say the least.

Although it looks complicated, this is elegant simplicity at its very best. A line was stretched from the dock, around the pilings, and snugged up with a come along. The height of the piling line is the middle of the average high and low tidal heights, relative to the length of the dock lines. Dock lines were spliced into the piling lines at the correct pre-measured locations, and then a tag line was spliced in to the the dock line's eye splices, that connects all three lines together. You can see below a cleated dock line with the tag line spliced into it.

And here is a picture of the boat tied up, and now for the elegant part of this system. When Mel comes into dock, he favors the windward side. All he has to do is grab the tag line anywhere and slide his hand to the amidships dock line and cleat it off. He then uses the tag line to access the other two lines to cleat them off. He does the same thing on the other side, and job done, in a literal  minute. Badda Bing, Badda Boom. No boat hooks, no casting aspersions on the crews skills, no final adjustments, or tape marks on the lines, just grab the tag line, anywhere, and it's easy, with the added bonus that your wife will like you even more when you come into dock, and she has to manage the lines.

It gets even better. In this slip, when you cast off the dock lines, they hang clear of the water, and the spring lines are also in effect built in, so no crossing of lines over the outboard motors that will get caught up, and or chafe the motor's covers. By the way, you can do this with larger boats also.

But what I truly liked the best, was the wonderful attention to detail, because even the hose is attached to the tag line with a spliced in snap hook. And...

The hose is on a reel, and already turned on, so when Mel gets off the boat, after rinsing it off, with his 40 lb Striper, he just cranks in the extra hose, and he is done. Okay not quite, he still has to fillet the huge Striper, and talk boats with his colleagues.

I could not have done this type of work, But South Dartmouth based Captain Steve Camera can, and did. Steve is one of those consummate captains who has spent a lifetime on the water, in more boats than I could ever count. Mel says, "He knows where the fish are, every time", and after having spent a most enjoyable hour with him on the phone, I believe him. Steve charters out of the South Dartmouth area, and organizes several fishing expeditions a year to locations like Costa Rica, and is planning an Alaskan fishing trip next summer. So if you are interested in one of his trips, or need some advice on how to do this type of rope work, Steve says call him, and he will try to help. His number is 508-989-4852. You will find him to be a most engaging, professional, and fun person to talk to. Thanks Mel and Steve, it was fun.

A nice visit by the classic schooner South Passage and an awful job done

September 1, 2015

It’s been a quiet time on Our Dreamtimeover the last few days as we waited to get our leaking transmission out and away for repair.  After doing our research we opted not to attempt the job ourselves. The transmission is located in an extremely awkward position under the deck and removing it involves disconnecting the drive shaft, unbolting the engine and moving it forward, unbolting the trans from the engine and then trying to wrangle about 65 kilos of cast iron gearbox over the top of the motor, out of the engine room, up into the cockpit then off the boat and away.

The classic gaff rigged schooner South Passage was an impressive sight heading down river
Skills needed include extreme flexibility of limb, great strength and a methodical approach executed with calm and patience. In other words it was probably more than our otherwise rock solid 30 year marriage was likely to survive. The other risk was that if we tried to do it ourselves, there was every chance Rob would be arrested for excessive swearing and cursing long before the task was completed. As a result we arranged for Gary from Marine Torque here in the marina to perform the extraction at his earliest availability which was September 1.

Karen hard at work doing not much. Great book by the way.
In the meantime, books were read, blogs written and odd jobs completed around the boat. We also had a pleasant visit on the dock beside us by the training vessel South Passage making an overnight stop to exchange one crew of high school students for the next bunch of adventure seekers. South Passage is a 30 metre gaff rigged schooner that has provided an old school sailing experience to over 40,000 teenagers during her career. The only winch on board is the windlass.

On voyages, the students run the ship under the guidance of watch leaders and qualified crew. They are organised in three watches named Red, White and Blue usually with between 6 and 8 students in a watch. They will be rostered for periods of two to four hours and will be in charge of the ship. Each watch works as a team. They bunk together, eat together and run the ship together when they are on duty. Of course, there are times when it is all hands on deck with all watches involved.

South Passage provided a very picturesque foreground for our sundowner pics.

You put the kids on an old school boat but their technology comes with them
We really enjoyed chatting with her crew about the boat and their experiences with the kids. It was also great to witness the excitement of the twenty or so young guys and girls coming aboard for their four day passage via Fraser and Moreton Island down to Brisbane. It was a pleasure handling their lines and seeing them on their way the following morning. She provided an impressive sight making her way down river towards the sea.

Then it was onto the lovely job of removing the transmission from the boat. With Rob hovering as a trades assistant, Gary got to work unbolting engine mounts and other ancillary items to create an escape route for the trans. It was clearly quite a while since it had last been separated from the engine and fought back all the way but with the judicious use of a power impact wrench Gary had the upper hand in the slow and painstaking  battle.  With the engine slid forward to create  room,  the last of the bolts were ready to remove  after three hours work.

We normally consider Our Dreamtime's engine room as spacious but it was far from it when we had to remove the trans.
Hidden away under the deck it's not an easy thing to get at
That's it down there and it has to fit out between the bulkhead and back of the engine. Just a bit tight.

Now the fun began. Supporting the 65kg weight of the transmission, while turning it sideways in a space ill suited to the task was interesting enough, but getting it up and over the engine was the real challenge. After much wriggling, twisting, heaving, huffing and grunting in a number of unsuccessful attempts, Gary’s incredible calm was fractured for a moment as he suggested that “Those #@^&*s who build these boats should have to come and pull these *^%#&@ing things out themselves to see how hard it is. *^%#&@ing bastards.”

Fortunately his stoicism quickly returned and we found we could get the engine an inch or so further forward which made all the difference. A few minutes later the heavy lump was out of the engine room and resting on a thick rag on the salon floor. We were then presented with the next challenge. On a Whitby, it’s over 1.6 metres or almost 5 ½ feet from the deck straight up and out into the cockpit. When you’re talking about 65kg (140lb) that’s a serious lift.

It's a serious lift up and out to the cockpit

We stood staring at the task ahead in silence for a moment before Rob came up with a solution. We were able to hang a block off the boom, secure a line down onto the transmission which we ran back to the sheet winch. It was then just a matter of Gary guiding it up and through the companion way while Rob winched it up. The last challenge was passing it off the boat to the dock without dropping the damned thing in the water.

Out of the boat and ready to go away for reconditioning.
The offending front seal that leaked away all our trans fluid.

The good news is there was no splash and the transmission is now on its way to Brisbane for complete overhaul. It should return in a week to ten days for re-installation then we can resume our odyssey north to the Great Barrier Reef.

In the meantime we’ll just have to kick back and enjoy ourselves here. Sundowners anyone?
